BACH IN AFRICA

Tuesday, July 18, 7 pm | St. Catherine’s Church (30 Vilniaus St., Vilnius)

A performer who has shaken the guitar world

DEREK GRIPPER (guitar, PAR)

This performer's name already appears in gold letters in world music history for fostering and popularising Africa's musical heritage. He has managed to transcribe works originally played on the kora (a 21-string West African instrument that sounds similar to a harp) for the six-string guitar! And he has done this so masterfully, in such a subtle and authentic way that he has shaken the guitar world and the hearts of audiences.
Hearing Gripper play, the legendary Grammy laureate John Williams could not hide his admiration: „One of the most interesting things I’ve heard on guitar in twenty years”. He invited him to collaborate that same instant. So now the world's most famous halls are vying to host the guitarist on their stages – from King's Place in London to Carnegie Hall in New York.
Taking into account his concert venue (St Catherine's Church), Gripper will be performing an original program. Starting with the works of the Baroque genius, J. S. Bach, he'll take us on a colourful journey through sights and sounds to distant Mali.

Program features J. S. Bach, traditional music of Mali for the kora (transcribed for six-string guitar by D. Gripper)

Concert duration 80 min.
Children aged under 7 not admitted
