At times it almost feels like happiness is a must… But you can also discover great beauty in sadness. Happiness is an absurd and bittersweet comedy about a family who aren't exactly what you would call conventional. Sweet, weird and eccentric people who choose their own bumpy road in life. They are awkward, maladjusted and do things other people would consider perverse. Their desire to find happiness is grand and colourful. They'd rather find their own path, wherever it may lead.

The dancers and the musician are accompanied on stage by six real people, aged 8 to 71 years old. The music for this performance is written by Frank Wienk (Binkbeats, Slagwerk Den Haag) and Niels Broos (The Kyteman Orchestra). Happiness is a tragic comedy in the tradition of films like Todd Solondz’s “Happiness” and Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums”. Stories about dysfunctional families that catch you off guard and leave you wondering whether you should laugh or cry…

NRC Handelsblad: “A strong piece by choreographers Weizman and Haver about the beauty of imperfection” (Francine van der Wiel).

In 2002, Guy Weizman and Roni Haver started their international dance company Club Guy & Roni in the city of Groningen, Netherlands. They create dynamic, daring yet also touching and humorous performances, reaching far beyond the genre of dance. In their quest for innovation, the duo collaborates with artists from the field of music, film, theatre, science and visual arts. Generating new music is a key feature in their work. Composers such as Heiner Goebbels, Michael Gordon and Yannis Kyriakides constantly write original scores. They won the Russian Golden Mask Award for L’Histoire du Soldat in 2013, as well as the Dutch Swan Award for Midnight Rising. The dance company is a popular guest at international venues and festivals in Europe. Since 2017, Guy Weizman is also the new artistic director of the Noord Nederlands Toneel (NNT), one of the four biggest theatre companies in the Netherlands.

Slagwerk Den Haag, founded in 1977 in The Hague, brings together a team fascinated by everything concerned with sound, pulse and materials that produce sound. The musicians are stage artists and highly versatile creators and co-creators. They play in every setting imaginable, on a traditional arsenal of instruments, but also on porcelain, equine jaws, glass or 3D-printed instruments. The group works alongside trendsetting artists and makers. Their projects reflect the very latest developments and a quest for the undiscovered. Slagwerk Den Haag collaborated with, among others, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Asko|Schönberg, NOISIA, the Dutch National Ballet and performs on stages all over the world. They worked with composers like Louis Andriessen, Guo Wenjing, Yannis Kyriakides, Steve Reich and John Luther Adams.
