Violeta Urmana, the foremost Lithuanian figure on the world opera scene, one of today’s leading singers who earned worldwide recognition as both soprano and mezzo-soprano, a UNESCO Artist for Peace, is bringing Schubert and R. Strauss’ song recital to Lithuania. Opera prima donna enjoys invitations from all of the world’s leading opera theatres – New York, Madrid, Chicago, Barcelona, Milan, Beijing, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Paris, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Florence, Naples, Los Angeles, etc.; she appears in Europe, the USA and Japan’s most coveted concert halls performing works by Bach, Mahler, Schönberg, Berg, Brahms, Beethoven, Rossini, Berlioz and Stravinsky among other composers. However, Urmana’s soirees of chamber music, in particular Lied recitals, are always exceptional events drawing remarkable attention of both critics and music connoisseurs.
Tonight the singer will share the stage with pianist Gaiva Bandzinaitė, in the past a longstanding pianist of singer Beatričė Grincevičiūtė. Born in Nida, a graduate of M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, she received Lied schooling in Graz and Salzburg. Today a resident of Salzburg, she has been a faculty member at the Vocal Department of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Mozarteum and a guest professor at the Vytautas Magnus University Music Academy for several decades. Bandzinaitė has accompanied the singing and interpretation master classes led by E. Schwarzkopf, Ch. Ludwig, B. Fassbaender, Th. Hampson, R. Holl, H. Deutsch, L. Šukytė and K. Widmer to name but a few, performed with singers Sir Willard White and Inge Borkh.
This Vilnius Festival concert offers a subtle meeting with German Lied. As a heedful sliding under the veil of dawning romanticist era this evening’s programme features Schubert’s songs, the ballad element of which ushers the listener to R. Strauss’ lofty and thespian peaks of vocal art.
